Vascular duplex ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging study that uses sound waves to visualize the veins and assess blood flow in real time. It is the gold-standard diagnostic tool for venous disease — the only way to accurately map vein anatomy, identify reflux, rule out deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and determine exactly which veins are causing your symptoms.

Does a vascular ultrasound hurt?
No. The study uses a smooth handheld probe and warm gel on the skin — most patients find it completely comfortable. There are no needles, no dye, and no radiation.
What is the difference between a duplex ultrasound and a regular ultrasound?
Duplex ultrasound combines standard imaging of the vein structures with Doppler flow measurement — so it shows both what your veins look like and how blood is actually moving through them. That flow information is what reveals reflux and clots.
Why do I have to stand during part of the study?
Venous reflux often only appears when gravity is working against your valves. Testing vein function both lying down and standing is how we demonstrate reflux accurately — it is a sign of a properly performed venous study, not an inconvenience.
How soon will I get my results?
The same day. Your results are reviewed with you immediately after the study, and if treatment is indicated, we map out the plan — including insurance verification — before you leave.
Can ultrasound detect a blood clot?
Yes. Duplex ultrasound is the standard first-line test for detecting deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If you have sudden swelling, warmth, or pain in one leg, contact your physician promptly — and if a clot is suspected, imaging should not wait.

There is very little to prepare. Wear loose, comfortable clothing so the leg can be easily accessed, stay normally hydrated, and plan to be on your feet briefly during part of the study.
